How many questions are on the New Jersey permit test?
50 multiple-choice questions, drawn at random. You must answer 40 correctly (80%) to pass. A 50-question timed practice simulator — 40 correct (80%) passes, matching the MVC's published requirement. The MVC's own knowledge test is untimed; our 45-minute clock builds pacing and confidence.

How many languages is the NJ permit exam offered in?
The written knowledge test is offered in 13 languages — English plus Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Hindi, Albanian, and Spanish — as well as American Sign Language. Oral tests are offered in English and Spanish, and for other languages the MVC can arrange a state-contracted interpreter, requested at your permit appointment.
Does the New Jersey license require more than the written test?
Yes — after the written permit exam you must pass a driving test with a MVC examiner. In New Jersey, the graded skill areas include driving in reverse, parallel parking, the k-turn, stops & smoothness, turns & intersections, vehicle control.
Worth knowing in New Jersey
- Parallel parking IS on the NJ road test — and self-parking vehicles are explicitly not allowed for the test.
- The K-turn (three-point turn) is required, and you'll back about 100 feet in a straight line at walking speed.
- GDL drivers under 21 must display two red reflective decals on their license plates — bring them to the road test.
- Your accompanying driver must stay in the vehicle; if they're licensed out-of-state or have under 3 years' experience, they must drive to the test area.
- The knowledge test is untimed at the MVC, offered in 13 languages plus ASL, with an audio option — our simulator adds a clock for pacing.
- New Jersey's vision standard is 20/50, with or without corrective lenses.
