👀 Observation
Observation is scored continuously across the whole drive, and it's the category where the examiner needs visible evidence. They can't tell what you noticed — only what they saw you look at. Deliberate, slightly exaggerated head movement is genuinely worth points here.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Frequent mirror checks throughout the drive, not just before maneuvers
- ✓Visible head movement at intersections, crosswalks and railroad crossings
- ✓Early reaction to pedestrians, cyclists and other hazards
- ✓Scanning far enough ahead that your driving looks planned
Step by step
- 1Check your mirrors every few seconds as a standing habit.
- 2At every intersection, look left, right, then left again — including on green.
- 3Check crosswalks on both sides before entering or turning through one.
- 4At railroad crossings, look and listen even when no signal is active.
- 5Keep your eyes scanning well up the road so hazards register early.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Fixing your gaze on the road immediately ahead of the car
- ✗Checking mirrors only when about to change lanes
- ✗Rolling toward a crosswalk without checking both sides for pedestrians
- ✗Late reactions that produce hard braking the examiner notices
