🎚️ Speed control
California grades speed against the Basic Speed Law, which means the posted limit is a ceiling, not a target. You can be marked down for driving the limit in conditions that don't support it — and you can equally be marked down for crawling, since driving too slowly is explicitly a scored error.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Speed matched to conditions: weather, traffic, visibility and road type
- ✓You never exceed the posted limit, including briefly on downgrades
- ✓You're not impeding traffic by driving unnecessarily slowly
- ✓Speed changes are smooth and anticipated rather than reactive
Step by step
- 1Read the posted limit and treat it as the maximum, not the goal.
- 2Reduce below the limit when rain, fog, heavy traffic, pedestrians or a school zone call for it.
- 3Keep pace with surrounding traffic where it's legal and safe to do so.
- 4Ease off early for turns, intersections and hazards rather than braking hard late.
- 5Watch for speed creeping up on downhill stretches — check the speedometer regularly.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Driving the posted limit in conditions that clearly call for less
- ✗Nervous under-driving, which is scored as impeding traffic
- ✗Letting speed drift over the limit downhill without noticing
- ✗Abrupt braking that shows you weren't planning far enough ahead
