Rules of the Road
Right-of-way, funeral processions, the left-lane law, and the 20 rules questions on the ILSOS exam. This guide has 140 questions, each citing the IL manual section it comes from — the first 18 are free to read below.
1 · RIGHT OF WAY
What must a driver do when encountering an organized funeral procession?
- ✓ Yield the right of way to all vehicles in the procession
- · Drive between the vehicles to keep traffic moving
- · Join the procession to get through the intersection
- · Pass every vehicle in the procession
Motorists must yield to the whole procession and may not cut between its vehicles unless a law enforcement officer directs them to.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Right of way, p. 262 · LANE USE
On an Illinois interstate or fully access-controlled freeway, when may a driver travel in the left lane?
- ✓ When passing another vehicle, apart from a few specific exceptions
- · At any time while keeping up with traffic
- · Only between sunrise and sunset
- · Whenever there is any traffic in the right lane
Left-lane use on interstates is reserved for passing; the listed exceptions cover congestion, weather, obstructions and yielding to emergency or construction vehicles.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Lane use, p. 293 · PARKING
You park facing downhill on a street with a curb. Which way should the front wheels point?
- ✓ Toward the curb
- · Away from the curb
- · Straight ahead
- · Toward the center of the road
Turning the wheels toward the curb when facing downhill lets the curb stop the vehicle if it starts to roll.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Parking, p. 344 · TURNING
On a curve or hill, a U-turn is allowed only if you can see how far in all directions?
- ✓ At least 500 feet
- · 100 feet
- · 200 feet
- · 1,000 feet
Turning around on curves and hills requires at least 500 feet of visibility every way, and municipalities may ban U-turns entirely on some roads.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Turning, p. 325 · VEHICLE CONTROL
The manual recommends at least how much space between the driver's chest and steering wheel?
- ✓ 10 inches
- · 4 inches
- · 6 inches
- · 18 inches
At least 10 inches allows appropriate room for the airbag to deploy.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Vehicle control, p. 236 · BICYCLES
Why does the manual suggest opening the driver's door with your right hand?
- ✓ It turns your body so you can look behind for bicyclists
- · It stops the door from swinging open too far
- · It is required by law in every situation
- · It reduces wear on the door hinges
Reaching across with the right hand forces the upper body to turn, giving a better view of vehicles and cyclists coming from behind.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Bicycles, p. 437 · DRIVER FITNESS
If you pass the vision screening while wearing corrective lenses, what must you do when driving?
- ✓ Wear the corrective lenses
- · Wear them only at night
- · Carry them but do not wear them
- · Retake the test every month
A corrective-lens restriction will appear on the license and the lenses must be worn while driving.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Driver fitness, p. 138 · DRIVER FITNESS
What minimum visual acuity must an Illinois license applicant meet?
- ✓ 20/40, with or without corrective lenses
- · 20/20 without lenses
- · 20/60
- · 20/100
Applicants need at least 20/40 acuity; acuity between 20/41 and 20/70 limits the driver to daylight driving only.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Driver fitness, p. 139 · DRIVER FITNESS
Fatigue can affect a driver's vision and:
- ✓ Decrease reaction time
- · Improve judgment
- · Shorten stopping distance
- · Increase tire traction
Physical or mental tiredness can impair vision and slow the driver's response.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Driver fitness, p. 8410 · CHILD RESTRAINTS
Until what age must a child generally ride in a rear-facing child restraint system in Illinois?
- ✓ Age 2
- · Age 1
- · Age 4
- · Age 8
Children must stay rear-facing until age 2 unless they already weigh more than 40 pounds or stand more than 40 inches tall.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Child restraints, p. 2411 · SAFE DRIVING
Aggressive driving occurs when a person intentionally:
- ✓ Commits an action that endangers people or property
- · Drives below the speed limit in snow
- · Checks mirrors before changing lanes
- · Yields to pedestrians
Aggressive driving involves intentional dangerous conduct.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Safe driving, p. 8912 · SAFE DRIVING
Which is an example of aggressive driving?
- ✓ Following too closely
- · Increasing following distance
- · Signaling before a lane change
- · Stopping for a red light
Speeding, tailgating, unsafe lane changes, improper signaling, and ignoring traffic controls are listed examples.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Safe driving, p. 8913 · WORK ZONES
What must a driver do when a work-zone flagger gives directions?
- ✓ Follow the flagger's instructions
- · Obey only nearby traffic lights
- · Continue at the posted speed
- · Stop only if workers are visible
A flagger controls traffic in the work zone and their directions must be followed.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Work zones, p. 7314 · PEDESTRIANS
A driver must yield to pedestrians:
- ✓ Entering or already in a crosswalk
- · Only in painted ladder crosswalks
- · Only when a crossing guard is present
- · Only after the pedestrian reaches the center
Crosswalks can be marked in different ways, and pedestrians entering or in them have priority.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Pedestrians, p. 2715 · SPACE MANAGEMENT
Which rule does the manual give for judging a safe following distance?
- ✓ The three-second rule
- · The one-second rule
- · The one-car-length-per-10-mph rule
- · The half-your-speed rule
Pick a fixed object ahead; if your vehicle reaches it before the count of three after the vehicle ahead passes it, you are following too closely.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Space management, p. 8316 · VEHICLE SPEED
According to the manual, doubling your speed does what to your stopping distance?
- ✓ Quadruples it
- · Doubles it
- · Leaves it unchanged
- · Cuts it in half
Stopping distance grows far faster than speed, so twice the speed needs roughly four times the room to stop.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Vehicle speed, p. 8417 · NIGHT DRIVING
How far before meeting an oncoming vehicle must high beams be dimmed?
- ✓ 500 feet
- · 100 feet
- · 200 feet
- · 300 feet
Bright lights must be dimmed 500 feet before meeting an oncoming vehicle and 300 feet before passing one.
📖 IL Manual · Illinois Rules of the Road 2026 (DSD A 112.47) - Night driving, p. 8718 · POOR CONDITIONS
When Illinois law requires you to run your windshield wipers, what else must be on?
- ✓ Your headlights
- · Your hazard flashers
- · Your high beams
- · Your interior dome light
Illinois ties headlight use to wiper use, so switch the headlights on whenever rain or snow makes the wipers necessary.
