👀 Observation
Observation is the one category you're being scored on continuously, from the moment you pull away to the moment you park at the end. Examiners can't read your mind, so what they grade is visible evidence — head movements, mirror checks, and whether you reacted to something before it became a problem.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Regular mirror checks throughout the drive, not only before maneuvers
- ✓Head movement at intersections, crossings and driveways — visibly looking, not just facing forward
- ✓Early reaction to pedestrians, cyclists and stopped buses rather than late braking
- ✓Scanning well ahead so your speed changes look planned instead of reactive
Step by step
- 1Check your mirrors every few seconds as a matter of routine so it becomes visible habit.
- 2At every intersection, look left, right, then left again — even on a green light.
- 3Scan the sidewalk and the gaps between parked cars for pedestrians about to step out.
- 4Look through the corner before you turn, into the road you're entering.
- 5Keep your eyes moving to a point well up the road so you spot hazards early.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Staring straight ahead at the road immediately in front of the hood
- ✗Checking mirrors only when about to maneuver, which reads as unfamiliar habit
- ✗Missing a pedestrian waiting at a crosswalk because you were watching traffic only
- ✗Reacting to hazards late, producing hard braking the examiner notices
