↩️ Turning

Turns are where most road tests are won or lost, because every turn packs lane choice, signaling, yielding, speed and observation into about eight seconds. Massachusetts examiners watch the whole sequence, not just whether you ended up on the right street.

What the examiner is watching for

  • You reach the correct lane well before the intersection, not at the last second
  • The turn stays inside its lane — no swinging wide into the next lane, no cutting the corner
  • You yield properly to oncoming traffic, pedestrians in the crosswalk, and anyone with the right of way
  • Speed drops before the turn, not during it, and you accelerate smoothly out of it

Step by step

  1. 1Check mirrors, then signal early — well before you slow down, so drivers behind you understand what's happening.
  2. 2Move into the correct lane: rightmost lane for a right turn, leftmost available lane for a left.
  3. 3Slow before you reach the corner so you can steer at a steady speed through it.
  4. 4Scan the crosswalk and the road you're turning into — pedestrians first, then traffic.
  5. 5For a left, wait behind the stop line or center of the intersection until there's a genuine gap; never creep into oncoming traffic.
  6. 6Complete the turn into the matching lane — right lane into right lane — and cancel your signal.

Mistakes that cost points

  • Swinging wide on a right turn so the car crosses into the next lane
  • Cutting the corner on a left turn and finishing in the wrong lane
  • Signaling after you've already begun braking or steering
  • Turning in front of oncoming traffic and making another driver slow for you — an automatic fail
