Junior Operator Law & Licensing

JOL restrictions and penalties, permits, and road test rules — essential for anyone under 18. This guide has 30 questions, each citing the MA manual section it comes from — the first 18 are free to read below.

QUESTION 1 OF 18

1 · JUNIOR OPERATOR LAW

Under the Junior Operator Law, for the first 6 months a driver under 18 may NOT:

  • · Drive on interstate highways
  • Carry passengers under 18 (except immediate family) without supervision
  • · Drive a vehicle with more than four seats
  • · Drive with any passengers after 10:00 p.m.

JOL: for the first 6 months, no passengers under 18 outside your immediate family — unless a licensed driver 21+ with a year of experience sits beside you.
