🛑 Stops & smoothness
The road test grades stopping twice over: stopping at signs — a complete stop at the right spot — and stopping smoothly, which is about brake control. The manual's law reference is specific: stop within five feet of the nearest crosswalk or stop line at the near side of the intersection.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓The car comes fully to rest — a slow roll is not a stop
- ✓Stops land at the stop line or within 5 feet of the nearest crosswalk
- ✓Steady, gentle brake pressure that settles the car rather than jerking it
- ✓Looking left and right, and yielding properly, before moving off
Step by step
- 1Spot the sign or signal early and ease off the gas.
- 2Apply steady, gentle brake pressure — the manual warns against slamming the pedal even without an emergency.
- 3Stop at the stop line, or within five feet of the nearest crosswalk at the near side of the intersection.
- 4Come completely to rest, then check both directions.
- 5Proceed only after yielding to traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Rolling stops — the most common way to lose stopping points
- ✗Stopping past the line or with the nose in the crosswalk
- ✗Braking late and hard, which reads as poor planning
- ✗A correct stop followed by pulling out without properly yielding
