New Jersey law requires you to move into the proper lane and signal at least 100 feet before making any turn — and the examiner is grading that whole sequence, plus your yielding at the intersection itself. Right turns stay tight to the curb; left turns keep to the correct side of the center line.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓The signal on at least 100 feet before the turn, and canceled after it
- ✓Right turns made from and to the rightmost practical position, without swinging wide
- ✓Left turns that don't cross lane markings, finishing right of the center line
- ✓Yielding to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians in the crosswalk before turning
Step by step
- 1Decide your turn well in advance — last-minute turns are unsafe, and a missed turn means taking the next one, never backing up.
- 2Check mirrors and blind spots for vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles.
- 3Signal at least 100 feet before the turn, then move into the proper lane.
- 4Slow before reaching the intersection, holding a steady speed through the turn.
- 5Stay in your lane until the turn is finished, then make sure the signal has canceled.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Signaling late — under 100 feet is a scored error even on a clean turn
- ✗Swinging wide on right turns instead of hugging the curb
- ✗Cutting across lane markings on left turns
- ✗Backing up after missing a turn instead of continuing to the next one
