How many questions are on the New York permit test?
20 multiple-choice questions, drawn at random. You must answer 14 correctly (70%) to pass. A 20-question practice simulator scored exactly like the real thing: 14 correct overall AND at least 2 of the 4 road-sign questions. The DMV's own test is untimed; our 20-minute clock builds pacing.

How many languages is the NY permit exam offered in?
The DMV offers the written knowledge test in multiple languages on touch-screen and paper, with audio versions available. It does not publish a fixed language count for the Class D test, so we don't invent one — ask your test site about your language.
Does the New York license require more than the written test?
Yes — after the written permit exam you must pass a driving test with a DMV examiner. In New York, the graded skill areas include driving in traffic, left & right turns, three-point turn, parallel parking, leaving the curb, intersections & right-of-way.
Worth knowing in New York
- Under 18? You must certify 50 hours of supervised practice — at least 15 after sunset — and the DMV recommends 10 of those hours in moderate to heavy traffic.
- A junior permit must be held, valid, for at least six months before you can take the road test.
- Road tests run on real city streets, and the DMV can cancel for bad weather — check the site before you go.
- Parallel parking is part of every New York road test — finish with your wheels no more than one foot from the curb.
- You may be asked for a three-point turn; the manual walks it in four exact steps.
- After the test, an interim license is available online and the photo license arrives by mail in about two weeks.
