🚫 Your test may not begin if…

The examiner inspects your vehicle and paperwork first. Any of these gets the vehicle rejected before you drive a foot:

  • !No physical photo learner permit — a photo of it on your phone is not accepted
  • !No original Pre-Licensing Course Certificate (MV-278), and no driver-ed Student Certificate (MV-285) on file — copies are not accepted
  • !Under 18 without the Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262) signed by a parent or guardian certifying 50 practice hours
  • !A vehicle without valid registration, inspection, and insurance, or not in good working order — doors and seat belts included
  • !The front passenger seat belt the examiner uses isn't available and clean
  • !No permanent plates on the vehicle — in-transit permits are not allowed for road tests
  • !No supervising driver age 21+ with a valid license, if you drove yourself to the test site

⚠️ You may be disqualified during the test for…

  • A dangerous action that forces the examiner to intervene — the test ends rather than let a hazard develop
  • Breaking a traffic law in front of the examiner: running a light or stop sign, an illegal turn, speeding
  • Striking the curb hard or another vehicle during the parallel park or three-point turn
  • Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk or to an emergency vehicle
  • Consistently unsafe habits across the drive — examiners score the whole route, not just the maneuvers
