🅿️ Parallel parking
New York's manual says it plainly: parallel parking takes skill and is part of every road test. The method is four steps — two feet out, hard right while backing, reverse the wheel at the pivot, straighten and settle — and the finish line is written into the manual: wheels no more than one foot from the curb.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓A controlled setup: signal, stop beside the vehicle ahead of the space, about two feet away
- ✓Looking through the rear window while backing — the manual says not to rely on mirrors
- ✓The pivot at the right moment: when your front wheels are opposite the other car's back bumper
- ✓A finished park inside one foot of the curb, without touching the vehicles or the curb
Step by step
- 1Pick a space big enough on your side of the road. Check mirrors, signal, and stop about two feet from the parked vehicle.
- 2Look over both shoulders, back slowly, and turn the wheel completely toward the curb — watching through the rear window.
- 3When your front wheels are opposite the back bumper of the vehicle ahead, turn the wheel the other way and keep backing.
- 4Look back and stop before touching the car behind. Straighten the wheels and pull forward to center.
- 5Check the finish: wheels no more than one foot from the curb. Nudge forward and back to tighten if needed.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Backing while watching the mirrors or camera instead of turning to look — assist features don't replace you
- ✗Turning the wheel back too early or too late, so the nose can't clear or the tail sits out in traffic
- ✗Finishing more than a foot out — the manual's number, and the examiner's
- ✗Opening the road-side door into traffic or a bicyclist afterward
