How many questions are on the Illinois permit test?
35 multiple-choice questions, drawn at random. You must answer 28 correctly (80%) to pass. How many languages is the IL permit exam offered in?
The manual documents oral exams — offered Monday through Thursday — for applicants with language barriers or reading disabilities. Contact your Secretary of State facility about written-test language availability; the manual doesn't publish a list.
Does the Illinois license require more than the written test?
Yes — after the written permit exam you must pass a driving test with a ILSOS examiner. In Illinois, the graded skill areas include the alley turnabout, straight-line backing, uphill & downhill parking, controls & paperwork check, intersections & turns, following & lane control.
Worth knowing in Illinois
- The exam fee covers three attempts within one year — after six failed drive exams, ILSOS requires a medical report before you test again.
- Graduates of approved driver-ed courses with A/B grades may skip the state drive exam through Cooperative Driver Testing.
- New in 2026: drivers 87 and older take an annual road test (the 79–86 requirement ended July 1, 2026, under the Road Safety & Fairness Act).
- GDL: hold the permit 9 months, log 50 practice hours (10 at night); curfews Sun–Thu 10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 p.m.; one passenger under 20 in the first year (siblings excepted).
- The written exam is waived at renewal if you've been conviction-free — otherwise it returns every 8 years.
- Illinois plates stay with the owner, not the car — worth knowing when you buy your first vehicle.
