⚖️ Intersections & right-of-way
The examiner routes you through controlled and uncontrolled intersections because that's where judgment shows: complete stops at the line, left turns yielded, the driver on the right given the tie, and no entering a box you can't clear — even on green.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓A complete stop before the stop line or crosswalk — wheels fully stopped
- ✓Ties broken correctly at uncontrolled corners: yield to the driver on the right
- ✓Dead signals treated as a four-way stop, the way PennDOT directs
- ✓Driveway and private-road entries yielded to roadway traffic and pedestrians
Step by step
- 1Read the control early — light, sign, or nothing — and set your speed for it.
- 2Stop completely at the legal point; creep forward only for visibility after the stop.
- 3Yield left turns to oncoming traffic and pedestrians; take the tie only when it's yours.
- 4Check the far side is clear before entering so you never block cross traffic.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Rolling stops — the most reliable point-loser on any road test
- ✗Entering on green without an exit and getting stranded in the box
- ✗Treating a dark signal as right-of-way instead of a four-way stop
- ✗Nosing out of driveways across the sidewalk without yielding
