↩️ Left & right turns
Pennsylvania's signal law scales with speed — at least 100 feet of signal below 35 mph, at least 300 feet at 35 and up — and the examiner is watching for it on every turn. A signal is notice, not right-of-way: the turn still has to be yielded and placed correctly.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Signals on early: 100 feet below 35 mph, 300 feet at 35 mph or more
- ✓Left turns yielded to oncoming traffic close enough to be a hazard — and to pedestrians
- ✓Correct lane in, correct lane out, without wide sweeps
- ✓Hand signals ready if the vehicle's signals ever fail
Step by step
- 1Decide early and get the signal on at the legal distance for your speed.
- 2Brake smoothly to turning speed before the corner, not in it.
- 3Scan the crosswalks on both sides, then the oncoming lane for left turns.
- 4Turn into the nearest legal lane and finish with the wheel straightened before accelerating.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Signaling at the corner instead of at distance — the law sets minimum feet, not vibes
- ✗Treating the signal as permission — it gives notice, never right-of-way
- ✗Cutting left turns across the near lane of the road you're entering
- ✗Forgetting pedestrians keep the crosswalk even when your path is green
