Common questions

How many questions are on the Virginia permit test?

40 multiple-choice questions, drawn at random. You must answer 34 correctly (85%) to pass. Two parts, exactly like the real thing: ten road-sign questions that must ALL be answered correctly before part two begins, then 30 general-knowledge questions needing 24 (80%). The DMV states no time limit; our 35-minute clock builds pacing.

What topics does the VA DMV permit exam cover?

The major areas identified in the official handbook: Rules of the Road; Road Signs & Signals; DUI, Demerits & Penalties; Permits & Provisional Licensing.

How many languages is the VA permit exam offered in?

The DMV offers the knowledge exam in many languages and American Sign Language, with an audio version available. For languages the exam is offered in, translators are not permitted — the exam itself does the translating.

Does the Virginia license require more than the written test?

Yes — after the written permit exam you must pass a driving test with a DMV examiner. In Virginia, the graded skill areas include backing, turn-abouts & u-turns, right-of-way & following, lanes & passing, intersections, signals & turns, lot parking.

Worth knowing in Virginia

  • Under 18, the road test happens inside your driver-ed course, not at the DMV; 18-plus applicants hold the permit 60 days or complete driver's ed.
  • The knowledge exam's sign part is the real gate: all ten sign questions must be correct before part two is even offered.
  • Under-18 knowledge-test failures carry a full 15-day wait; everyone is limited to one attempt per business day.
  • 45 supervised practice hours are required for minors — 15 of them after sunset.
  • Provisional license, first year: curfew midnight to 4 a.m., and one passenger under 21.
  • Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia — the only state with a total ban.
