🔙 Backing up
Florida asks you to back the vehicle about 50 feet in a straight line, and this is the maneuver where modern habits work against you: mirrors and backup cameras are not permitted for it. The examiner wants you turned around, looking through the rear window, controlling the car at a crawl.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓You turn and look to the rear through the back window — not at the mirrors or camera screen
- ✓The car tracks straight for roughly 50 feet
- ✓Speed stays slow and controlled the whole way
- ✓You stop smoothly without drifting off line
Step by step
- 1Come to a full stop and shift into reverse with your wheels straight.
- 2Put your left hand at the top of the wheel and turn your body to look through the rear window over your right shoulder.
- 3Ease off the brake and let the car move at idle speed — no throttle needed.
- 4Steer with small corrections only, keeping the car tracking straight.
- 5Continue about 50 feet, holding your line and your speed.
- 6Brake gently to a complete stop and shift back to drive or park.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Using the backup camera or mirrors, which are not allowed for this maneuver
- ✗Backing too quickly so small steering inputs turn into swerves
- ✗Weaving because of over-correction rather than small adjustments
- ✗Practicing only in a car with a camera and then relying on it out of habit
