🔄 Three-point turn
The three-point turn asks you to reverse direction in a space of roughly 20 to 40 feet using forward, reverse, forward. It's really an observation test wearing a maneuver's clothing: the examiner is watching whether you check for traffic in both directions at each stage, not just whether the car ends up pointing the other way.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓You check traffic in both directions before starting and at each change of direction
- ✓The turn is completed within the marked space without hitting the curb
- ✓Movements are slow and controlled, with the car fully stopped between stages
- ✓You signal your intention before beginning
Step by step
- 1Signal, pull to the right edge, and stop. Check traffic in both directions.
- 2With the way clear, turn the wheel fully left and pull forward slowly across the road, stopping before the far edge.
- 3Shift to reverse, check both directions again, turn the wheel fully right, and back up slowly.
- 4Stop before the curb behind you, then shift back into drive.
- 5Check traffic once more, straighten the wheel, and pull away in the new direction.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Starting the turn without checking for approaching traffic
- ✗Hitting or riding up the curb at either end of the maneuver
- ✗Rushing the reverse stage instead of moving at a crawl
- ✗Needing more than three movements because the first turn wasn't full lock
