↩️ Signal & turns
Florida grades the whole turn: the lane you approach in, when the signal goes on, whether you yield, and where you end up. The signal requirement is specific — at least 100 feet before the turn — and hand signals are fair game, so knowing all three matters even with working lights.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓The turn signal is on for at least the last 100 feet before the turn
- ✓You're in the correct lane well before the intersection
- ✓You yield to oncoming traffic, pedestrians and anyone with the right of way
- ✓The turn stays in its lane and finishes in the matching lane
Step by step
- 1Pick your lane early: rightmost lane for a right turn, leftmost available for a left.
- 2Signal at least 100 feet before the turn — roughly six or seven car lengths.
- 3Slow before the corner so you can steer through it at a constant speed.
- 4Check the crosswalk and the road you're entering before you commit.
- 5For a left, wait for a real gap; making oncoming traffic brake for you can end the test.
- 6Complete the turn into the corresponding lane and confirm the signal cancels.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Signaling later than 100 feet out, which is scored even on an otherwise clean turn
- ✗Swinging wide on a right and crossing into the adjacent lane
- ✗Cutting the corner on a left and landing in the wrong lane
- ✗Not being able to demonstrate the three hand signals when asked
