🛑 Stops & signals
Florida tests two different stops. The routine one is the complete stop at signs and lights, where a slow roll counts as a failure to stop. The other is the quick stop on command — the examiner will ask you to brake firmly at a low speed, and they're grading smooth control, not drama.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓The vehicle comes fully to rest at stop signs and red lights — not a rolling pause
- ✓You stop at the correct point: the stop line, then the crosswalk, then the intersection edge
- ✓On the quick stop, braking is firm and straight with no skid and no swerve
- ✓You keep control of the wheel and stay in your lane through the stop
Step by step
- 1Spot signs and signals early and start easing off the accelerator.
- 2Brake progressively so the car settles rather than lurching.
- 3Stop before the stop line; with no line, stop before the crosswalk; with neither, stop where you can see cross traffic.
- 4Come completely to rest, then look both ways before moving off.
- 5For the quick stop, keep both hands on the wheel, brake firmly and evenly, and hold the car straight.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Rolling through a stop at two or three miles per hour
- ✗Stopping with the nose of the car past the line or in the crosswalk
- ✗Stabbing the brakes on the quick stop and locking up or swerving
- ✗Stopping properly but pulling away without checking both directions
