🅿️ Parking maneuvers
Florida does not test parallel parking. What it does test is straight-in parking within a marked space and parking on a grade — where the wheel direction matters and is easy to get backwards under pressure. The grade rule is worth memorizing cold, because it's also common knowledge-exam material.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓The car finishes centered in the space, straight, and fully inside the lines
- ✓You approach slowly and make your steering corrections early
- ✓On a grade with a curb, front wheels are turned the correct way
- ✓The parking brake is set and the car is left in the appropriate gear
Step by step
- 1Approach the space slowly and wide enough to get a good angle into it.
- 2Steer in smoothly, straightening as the car settles between the lines.
- 3Stop fully inside the space, centered, without touching the lines.
- 4Parking downhill with a curb, turn the front wheels toward the curb; uphill with a curb, turn them away from it.
- 5With no curb in either direction, turn the wheels toward the edge of the road.
- 6Set the parking brake, then leave the car in park — or in gear with a manual.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Approaching too fast and needing several corrections to land in the space
- ✗Finishing crooked or over a line
- ✗Reversing the uphill and downhill wheel rule under pressure
- ✗Forgetting the parking brake once the car is in the space
