'Drive in the correct lane' is one of the six actions the Ohio examiner assesses by name. That means choosing the proper lane for where you're going — right lane for travel on multi-lane roads, the lane just right of center for passing and left turns — and holding it steadily without drifting or straddling markings.

What the examiner is watching for

✓Correct lane choice for the instruction given — turns set up early, not swerved into
✓A steady position centered in the lane, not wandering between markings
✓Lane changes made with mirror checks, a signal, and a head check
✓Keeping right on multi-lane roads except to pass or turn left

Step by step

1Listen to the examiner's instruction, then set up the lane early — a block ahead beats a last-second dive.
2Center the car in the lane and keep your eyes high; the car goes where you look.
3For each lane change: mirror, signal, head check, then move — one lane at a time.
4On four-lane roads, return to the right lane after passing; use the lane right of center for left turns.

Mistakes that cost points

✗Straddling a lane line while deciding — pick the lane, then commit
✗Drifting wide on curves into the adjacent lane
✗Changing lanes inside an intersection
✗Camping in the left lane after a pass instead of returning right
