The on-road evaluation explicitly grades performing turns, using your turn signals, and turning around and backing up. Signal every movement, take turns at controlled speed into the correct lane, and back with your head turned — the same over-the-shoulder discipline the maneuverability course just tested.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓A signal before every turn, lane change, and pull-away from the curb
- ✓Turns finished in the correct lane without wide sweeps or cut corners
- ✓Backing done looking through the rear window, not just the mirrors
- ✓Hand position and steering control through the whole movement
Step by step
- 1Signal early, brake to turning speed before the corner, not in it.
- 2Scan crosswalks and oncoming traffic, then turn into the nearest legal lane.
- 3For the turn-around: pick the spot the examiner directs, signal, and keep it slow and deliberate.
- 4When backing, turn your body, look out the rear window, and creep — speed is never the goal.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Forgetting the signal on the turn-around or when leaving the curb
- ✗Swinging wide into the far lane on right turns
- ✗Backing while staring at the backup camera instead of the rear window
- ✗Rushing the turn-around and having to re-shuffle mid-roadway
