Full🛑 Stopping & starting
The on-road examiner rides as a front-seat passenger, gives you travel instructions, and grades how you stop and start the vehicle. Complete stops behind the line, smooth brake pressure, and controlled starts — including on any grade — are the foundation the rest of the drive is scored on.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Full stops — wheels completely stopped, behind the stop line or crosswalk
- ✓Smooth, early braking rather than late, hard stops
- ✓Controlled starts without lurching or rolling back
- ✓Scanning the intersection before moving again
Step by step
- 1Brake early and squeeze to a stop — the last five feet should be the gentlest.
- 2Stop behind the line, then creep forward only if you need visibility.
- 3Look left-right-left before starting through any intersection.
- 4Start with steady, light throttle — smooth is what's being graded.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Rolling stops — the classic point-loser on every state's test, Ohio included
- ✗Stopping past the stop line or into the crosswalk
- ✗Hard, late braking that rocks the examiner forward
- ✗Sitting frozen at a clear intersection — hesitation reads as uncertainty
