🎯 Maneuverability test

The maneuverability course is five markers: four forming a 9-foot-by-20-foot box, plus a center 'point' marker ahead — measurements are taken from that point. Step one: drive forward through the box, steer to the side of the point the examiner calls, and stop with your rear bumper even with it, parallel with the course. Step two: reverse past the point, straighten, back all the way through the box, and stop with your front bumper even with the two rear markers. Run over or knock down a marker and the test ends on the spot.

What the examiner is watching for

  • ✓A square, parallel start — centered between the entry markers with wheels straight
  • ✓Steady idle-speed control both directions, without stopping mid-course
  • ✓The two stop positions judged correctly: rear bumper even with the point, then front bumper even with the rear markers
  • ✓Staying generally parallel with the course — finishing crooked costs points

Step by step

  1. 1Line up centered between the entry markers, wheels straight, parallel with the course.
  2. 2Drive forward through the box at idle speed; the examiner directs you left or right of the point marker.
  3. 3Steer gently past the chosen side and stop when your rear bumper is even with the point marker.
  4. 4Reverse past the point, straightening as you re-enter the box, looking back through the rear window.
  5. 5Stop with your front bumper even with the two rear markers, then drive out of the test area cleanly.

Mistakes that cost points

  • ✗Running over, knocking down, or dragging a marker — immediate failure, not a deduction
  • ✗Stopping mid-course to think — points come off for stopping and for misjudged stop positions
  • ✗Big steering inputs past the point — a gentle drift beats a swerve in a 9-foot lane
  • ✗Finishing at an angle — 'generally parallel with the course' is graded at both stops
