Three CSMA 19 areas cover controlled driving: negotiating intersections ('reduces speed when approaching, checks intersection traffic, looks both ways'), signs and signals ('stops at indicated place, proceeds to gain clear vision but stops again if necessary'), and traffic lights ('comes to smooth stop in ample time... starts promptly when light turns green'). One Virginia rule to burn in: turns at red ARROW lights are prohibited — both right and left.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Speed reduced on approach, traffic checked both ways
- ✓Stops at the indicated place, with a second stop for clear vision when needed
- ✓Smooth stops in ample time at lights; prompt starts on green
- ✓Turns signaled, in the proper lane, completed satisfactorily
Step by step
- 1Slow before the intersection, not in it — then scan both ways.
- 2Stop at the line; if you can't see, creep and stop again — that two-stage stop is on the form.
- 3At lights: read stale greens, stop smoothly for yellows you can't beat, start promptly on green.
- 4Remember Virginia's red-arrow rule: no turn at a red arrow, ever.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Rolling the second stop after creeping for visibility
- ✗Turning right on a red ARROW as if it were a round red
- ✗Late, hard stops at lights the examiner saw coming
- ✗Slow starts on green while you finish a mirror check
