Two CSMA 19 lines carry the judgment half of the test: 'yields without hesitating when necessary, shows consideration of pedestrians... stops behind crosswalks,' and 'maintains proper distance and speed in traffic.' Virginia's manual teaches the 2-3-4 second ladder for following distance — two seconds ideal, three at night or in rain, four in heavy traffic.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Yields made decisively — hesitation is named on the form
- ✓Pedestrians given visible consideration, stops behind crosswalks
- ✓Following distance scaled to conditions: 2, 3, then 4 seconds
- ✓Speed appropriate to traffic, not just the posted number
Step by step
- 1Know the yield before you arrive: left turns yield, uncontrolled ties yield right.
- 2Stop behind the crosswalk line every time — creep forward only after.
- 3Count the gap: two seconds clear day, three at night or in rain, four in heavy traffic.
- 4Commit when it's your turn — decisive is safe.
