🅿️ Lot parking

Virginia's graded parking is the ordinary kind: 'drives into a parking lot and parks vehicle, checks for any traffic, signals when necessary, maintains proper speed, parks within lines.' There is no parallel parking on the Virginia list — spend your practice on clean, centered lot parking and calm lot speeds instead.

What the examiner is watching for

  • Lot speed held low with pedestrians checked
  • The space entered smoothly, signaled when necessary
  • The vehicle finishing within the lines, centered
  • Controlled, unhurried corrections if needed

Step by step

  1. 1Enter the lot slow — lots are pedestrian territory.
  2. 2Pick the space early, signal, and swing wide enough to enter straight.
  3. 3Pull in centered; if you're off, back out once and re-enter rather than shimmy.
  4. 4Park fully within the lines, straighten the wheels, and set the brake.

Mistakes that cost points

  • Carrying street speed into the lot
  • Finishing on or over a line — 'within lines' is the graded standard
  • Multiple small shimmies instead of one clean re-entry
  • Skipping the traffic check while focused on the space
