Full🔄 The alley turnabout
Illinois's signature maneuver: turn your vehicle around using an alley on the left side of the street. Signal, pull slightly past the alley, back into it looking through the rear window, stop before the sidewalk line, then signal and pull out in the new direction. The examiner grades observation, control, and traffic judgment through the whole sequence.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Traffic checked before every phase — approach, backing, and pull-out
- ✓Backing done with your head turned to the right and over both shoulders, not on mirrors alone
- ✓The vehicle kept under idle-speed control in close quarters
- ✓Correct signals into and out of the maneuver
Step by step
- 1Signal and stop just past the alley mouth, close to the right edge of your lane.
- 2Shift to reverse, turn to look through the rear window, and check both directions.
- 3Back slowly into the alley, steering so your car lines up square, and stop before the sidewalk.
- 4Signal left, check traffic both ways, and pull out into the proper lane in the new direction.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Backing while watching the mirrors or camera instead of turning your head
- ✗Blocking the street mid-maneuver by starting from the wrong position
- ✗Skipping the traffic check before pulling out — the examiner never does
- ✗Bumping or riding over the alley aprons at the entrance
