Before the drive, the examiner verifies the vehicle: proof of insurance, valid front AND rear Illinois plates, the right weight class for your license, and required equipment in working order. You'll be asked to operate controls, only the examiner rides along, and seat belts are mandatory for both of you.

Step by step
- 1The week before: run every control with the car parked — lights, signals, wipers, defroster, horn.
- 2Check both plates are mounted and the registration is current.
- 3Bring the insurance card that matches the vehicle.
- 4Belt up before the examiner asks — it's mandatory for both seats.
Mistakes that cost points
