⛰️ Uphill & downhill parking
The drive exam grades parking on a grade and starting again: wheels turned the correct way (toward the curb downhill, away from the curb uphill with a curb present), parking brake set, and a controlled start without rolling. It's a thirty-second maneuver that's pure rule-recall plus smoothness.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Wheels turned correctly for the grade and curb
- ✓Parking brake set before your foot leaves the brake
- ✓A start without roll-back or lurch
- ✓Traffic checked before pulling away
Step by step
- 1Downhill: wheels toward the curb. Uphill with a curb: wheels away, let the car settle onto the curb.
- 2Set the parking brake, shift to park.
- 3To leave: brake on, shift, release the parking brake, then ease out.
- 4Signal and check over your shoulder before rejoining traffic.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Wheels straight — the default wrong answer on hills
- ✗Uphill-with-curb turned toward the curb (that's the downhill move)
- ✗Forgetting the parking brake entirely
- ✗Rolling backward during the restart
