The on-road portion grades ordinary city driving: full stops at signs and signals, turns from and into the correct lanes, and Illinois-specific judgment — like the left turn on red onto a one-way street, and stopping before the sidewalk when leaving an alley or driveway. Any traffic violation or dangerous action fails the exam automatically.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Complete stops behind the line — and again at the sidewalk when exiting alleys
- ✓Turns set up early, finished in the nearest legal lane
- ✓Yield judgment: left turns, four-way ties yielded to the right
- ✓No violations — one real infraction ends the test
Step by step
- 1Brake early, stop fully, and scan left-right-left before proceeding.
- 2Signal well ahead, position correctly, and keep turning speed low.
- 3From an alley or driveway: stop before the sidewalk, then again at the roadway edge.
- 4Treat every intersection as graded — because it is.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Rolling the stop sign — the automatic-failure rule has no warning shot
- ✗Wide right turns into the far lane
- ✗Ignoring the sidewalk stop when leaving an alley
- ✗Hesitating through your right-of-way until traffic is confused
