Full🔙 Straight-line backing
The drive exam includes backing roughly 50 feet in a straight line. The manual's own instruction is the graded standard: turn your head to the right and look through the rear window, keep speed to a crawl, and hold the line without weaving. Backup cameras don't replace the head turn.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓The head turned right, eyes through the rear window for the full distance
- ✓Idle-speed control with the brake covered
- ✓A straight track without drifting or weaving
- ✓A smooth, complete stop on instruction
Step by step
- 1Shift to reverse; right arm over the seatback, head turned to the right.
- 2Creep backward — off the gas, feathering the brake.
- 3Steer with small corrections; look well behind the car, not at the bumper.
- 4Stop smoothly when told, shift to park, face forward.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Relying on the backup camera — the head turn is what's graded
- ✗Speed creeping above a walking pace
- ✗Weaving from over-correction
- ✗Finishing angled across the lane
