Georgia's road test includes parallel parking in a marked space 22 feet long and 10 feet deep. The graded standard: park without striking the boundaries and finish with your vehicle not more than 18 inches from the curb. Smooth, controlled, and inside the lines beats fast every time — the examiner marks the score sheet and shows it to you afterward.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Entering the space in reverse under control, without striking the boundary markers
- ✓A finish within 18 inches of the curb
- ✓Proper observation the whole way — head turned, checking traffic
- ✓Both hands on the wheel and no fumbling between forward and reverse
Step by step
- 1Signal and stop parallel to the vehicle position ahead of the space, about two feet out.
- 2Reverse with the wheel toward the curb, watching over your shoulder — not just mirrors.
- 3Straighten as your front clears the space's forward boundary, and settle in.
- 4Correct with one forward-and-back adjustment if needed, finishing within 18 inches of the curb.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Striking a boundary or riding onto the curb — the errors the score sheet punishes hardest
- ✗Finishing angled or two feet off the curb — 18 inches is the graded line
- ✗Staring at the backup camera instead of turning your head
- ✗Rushed corrections — one deliberate adjustment beats three panicked ones
