Full🔙 Straight-line backing
Georgia grades backing about 50 feet in a straight line — slowly (no more than 10 mph), without crossing the boundary lines, and with your head turned to watch through the rear window. It's a control-and-observation test: the examiner wants to see that reverse is something you steer, not something that happens to you.
What the examiner is watching for
- ✓Speed held to a crawl — 10 mph is the ceiling, not the target
- ✓Head turned to look through the rear window for the full distance
- ✓The vehicle holding its line without crossing the boundaries
- ✓Small, smooth corrections instead of big wheel swings
Step by step
- 1Shift to reverse, right arm over the seat back, and look through the rear window.
- 2Creep backward at idle speed — cover the brake, stay off the gas.
- 3Steer with small inputs; the car follows your eyes, so look far down your path.
- 4Stop smoothly when directed, shift to park, and face forward again.
Mistakes that cost points
- ✗Backing by mirrors or camera alone — Georgia grades the head turn
- ✗Speed creeping up past a walking pace
- ✗Drifting across a boundary line while looking away
- ✗Over-correcting into a weave instead of nudging the wheel
